A duplex residence achieves its form through the aggregation of Near-Figural volumes. Near-figure is an ontology that sits between the figural, such as John Hedjuk’s “Victims”, and the non-objective, in this case a three-dimensional Tan Gram set. The volumes were generated by a process of graphic morphing between architectural “characters” (The Airborne Seed, the Thinking cap, the Hourglass, and the Wandering Man) and an abstract tan gram element. The resulting forms display characteristics of both parent objects, but are neither figurative nor abstract. Infrastructure for a small community of residences was also subject to manipulation. Streets were transformed into perspective machines, generating shadows of neighboring residential structures.
