This
proposal for a single-family house is situated on a non-conforming residential lot
in Highlands, New Jersey. The property’s slender proportions combined with
the required side-yard setbacks resulted in a very narrow building footprint
with limited interior space.
In response to
the building proportions, the vertical circulation was positioned centrally within
the house, while the living spaces were pushed to the extremities. This “dumbbell”
arrangement maximized interior space and access to light. The entry door was
pulled back from the street in line with the stairwell, creating a dramatic
entry sequence under the massing of the upper floors. The stairwell terminates
at a bulkhead leading to a rooftop deck providing views of the Atlantic Ocean.
